The Texas and Pacific Abrams No. 1 well, located in Mitchell County, Texas, lays claim to being the first producing well in the Permian Basin. This well started up in 1920 in the Westbrook Field and was still producing as of 1995. This well is also sometimes referred to as the W. H. Abrams No. 1 well.
The Santa Rita # 1 well located in Reagan County, Texas is the most famous producing well in the play. The well came in on May 28, 1923, and produced until May 1990 when it was plugged and abandoned.
